Working under a P21+ procurement framework, our brief was to redevelop and expand the existing out-patient Endoscopy department at Chesterfield Royal Hospital to bring the department up to modern standards and to accommodate the growing number of patients.
The key challenges were to improve staff efficiency and patient care. Working alongside hospital staff in a series of design workshops we achieved this through the use of staff observation areas and separate pathways that split male and female patients, improving privacy and dignity.
The building occupies a challenging site – part refurbishment and part new-build, infilling an unused courtyard to create space for future patient numbers. With no external walls, a series of large rooflights bring natural light into waiting areas and circulation spaces, creating a calming environment for patients and staff.
The new department is well-connected to the existing hospital, meets the latest HBN standards, has a full upgrade of energy efficient services, and provides a relaxing, safe and effective environment for treatment and care.
