Bradford Endoscopy Unit

Bradford Teaching Hospitals

A £25m new-build endoscopy unit at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

The new Bradford Endoscopy Unit is a £25m purpose-built home for the endoscopy services at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (BTHFT).

Procured using ProCure 23, the objectives of the project were to increase the existing endoscopy capacity and, crucially, to achieve JAG accreditation – the clinical accreditation body for endoscopy. To enable this, The Manser Practice were involved from RIBA Stage 0 through to construction, carrying out an initial feasibility study to determine the best location for the building, settling on a site that provided a new external entrance and drop-off area for outpatients, as well as a good internal link to the main hospital for inpatients via a separate patient pathway.

The building is arranged on two levels, with patient facilities on the upper floor and staff and plant areas on the floor below. There are 150sq m of photovoltaic panels on the roof, which will help to achieve a BREEAM Very Good rating.

Internally, the unit’s design is based on a ‘cabin’ model, providing each patient with their own en-suite ‘cabin’ in which they remain for the duration of their stay, except when procedures are carried out in one of the eight dedicated treatment rooms. Two of the 32 ‘cabins’ are designed for bariatric patients and two treatment rooms have radiation protection for fluoroscopy and can accommodate procedures requiring general anaesthesia. This layout provides the highest quality patient experience, maximising patient privacy and dignity from admission to recovery, whilst improving infection control and creating a highly flexible department for the hospital.

The exterior of the building is clad in aluminium panels and full height glazing, while the interior colour palette was inspired by David Hockney, one of Bradford’s most celebrated people.

The collaborative design process involved multiple workshops with internal stakeholders within the Trust, such as the clinical team, estates and facilities teams, and external stakeholders such as the local planning authority.
