Gatwick Hilton

200 bedroom extension to an original YRM design hotel

We were commissioned by Hilton International to design an extension to their existing award-winning hotel at Gatwick Airport by YRM architects. Hilton wanted to increase the number of rooms on the existing hotel site as well as the conference facilities and restaurants. We developed several options, the preferred one being a 230 bedroom extension on the landscaped area to the south of the existing hotel and a new executive lounge at the junction with the existing south block.

Both the eaves height and length of bedroom blocks were limited by the Civil Aviation Authority due to the hotel’s proximity to the runway, it was therefore necessary to bury the service areas and plant in a purpose-built basement level. We have arranged the new blocks about an axis perpendicular to the flight path of in order to frame views of take-off from the reception and lift lobby.

The external envelope has single glazing which is silicone bonded to the cladding frame with fritted edges to play down the distinction between solid panels and windows and produce a seamless effect. Proximity to the airport required an acoustic cavity and internal bedroom linings are therefore a separate construction from the external skin. Curved escape stairs book-end each block and are clad in a shimmering screen of stainless steel mesh.

The Manser Practice delivered the extension on time and on budget.
