LEGOLAND Castle Hotel

Windsor

A 61 bedroom ‘fully themed’ new-build hotel in LEGOLAND Windsor Resort

The Manser Practice were appointed by Merlin Entertainments Developments as architects and interior designers for a new 61 bedroom LEGOLAND Castle Hotel and an extension to the existing hotel at LEGOLAND Windsor Resort, UK.

The project was a unique challenge, involving the co-ordination of a complex planning application and a large number of both construction and artistic consultants from inception to completion. We were also tasked with integrating the theming into the fabric of the building rather than treating it as an ‘add on.’ This, together with a durable product selection, enabled a simple and more cost-effective future maintenance strategy. As part of these works a fully bespoke cladding system of glass reinforced concrete sandwich panels was designed and manufactured to create a LEGO Castle exterior, built to the strict LEGO proportions and colour palette – and therefore in theory could be built from LEGO bricks

We also worked closely with Merlin’s delivery team and staff at the existing hotel to ensure that the proposed building met the expectations and aspirations of all project stakeholders, drawing on lessons learned from work on their previous hotels and offering our hotel design experience to a client relatively new to the hotel sector. Typical bedroom layouts were rationalised, joinery was reviewed and reworked, and consideration was given to the enjoyment of the rooms by adults as well as children. In the existing hotel, The Manser Practice led works to improve the existing hotel’s check-in and commercial facilities, retrofit two new lifts and extend the existing bar and restaurant area to accommodate the additional capacity of the new hotel.

Work commenced on site in June 2016 and the hotel was completed and opened to guests in June 2017.
