Mayflower Cruise Terminal

Refurbishment of an existing cruise terminal in Southampton

The client’s initial brief was to provide a new terminal to cater for their ever-growing requirement to turn around cruise ships.

We worked closely with Associated British Ports and the cruise ship operators to define their requirements. It was quickly identified that a new terminal was unaffordable so we then turned to re-using the existing building on the site (a former banana shed and 1950’s departure lounge). This presented a series of problems as the existing shed took up more of the site than a new one would require, which did not allow for any vehicle set-down area.

Through a detailed study of the existing building’s cantilevered structure we identified that the roadside walls could be removed. By then inserting a new cantilevered spine wall under the roof of the existing building, the space was divided to create all the primary accommodation and leave space for the vehicle drop off. Using this strategy we were able to very efficiently create all the accommodation required for a budget of £400 per m2. The project was delivered on time and on budget.
