The Manser Practice have refurbished and extended a large, eight bedroom house in Rock, Cornwall. The late Victorian property, a local landmark, was converted to a hotel in the 1950s but had fallen into a state of disrepair and closed in 2008. Now a private family home, a series of interventions have been added to the building to make it more liveable. To the main house, all façades and roofs were sensitively repaired, and internally the spaces were re-planned to improve circulation, with all services and insulation being brought up to current standards.
At the rear of the house a poorly-built 1960s extension has been replaced with a well-laid out, contemporary extension clad in a mix of reconstituted Cornish stone and Cornish granite window surrounds. At the front, a large south-facing terrace and swimming pool have been added to make the most of the spectacular views of the Camel Estuary.
The project was granted planning permission in late 2022 and completed two years later.
