Sketch

Iconic conversion of a Grade II* listed 18th Century house in Mayfair into a destination place for food, art and music.

The Manser Practice was appointed as executive architects to deliver the conversion of a Grade II* listed 18th Century house in Mayfair into a destination place for food, art and music.

Formerly the home of the Royal Institute of British Architects, the building had lain derelict for almost a decade. Despite its neglected state there was significant resistance to the conversion of an original James Wyatt house into a series of bars, a restaurant and a gallery space. We successfully liaised with heritage consultants to transform the building into an exciting modern venue, while restoring and preserving the most important elements of the Wyatt interior for future generations. As part of our services we negotiated more than 40 party wall awards – required to carry out the extensive structural works.

A concept design for the Sketch interiors was already in place at the time of our appointment. We were approached by the client because of our reputation for delivering complex refurbishment projects in central London. Our extensive site and construction experience allowed us to take control of the detailed design of the project and to manage the delivery of this unique interior on site. We worked closely with the contractor to ensure the best possible finish, securing specialist boat builders from the Isle of Wight to produce the distinctive egg-like bathrooms pods.
