Refurbishment and rationalisation of an existing facility and inpatient ward

The redevelopment at Chesterfield Royal Hospital provides a new patient-focused one stop department for a range of women’s health treatment services and also redevelops the hospital’s adjacent inpatient ward. Meetings with staff and patients identified staff productivity, cost efficiency, improved patient privacy and dignity, and the creation of a friendly, welcoming hospital environment as key priorities for the redevelopment.

This brief had to be achieved within an existing 1980’s octagonal ward layout with a centralised nurse base that was very disorientating.

“The new accommodation for the Women’s Health Unit has improved the overall patient experience. The layout of patient accommodation and consultation rooms allows significantly more patient privacy than experienced prior to the refurbishment. Staff are therefore able to care for the patients with minimal disruption and improved privacy and dignity. Patients comment on the overall feeling of calm that the fixtures, fittings and art work bring”
