Manser at UKREiiF

Our future is being built in Leeds - with initiatives in place by UKREiiF organisers to help diversify the conference, We took along three Manser architectural assistants and watched them build their network

What can be said about UKREiiF that hasn’t already been said over the last few days. A worthwhile trip to Leeds for everyone we spoke to, for a packed diary of talks, B2Bs and networking events. We moved some important conversations forward, caught up with existing industry colleagues, and made some great new contacts and future collaborators.

Last year we attended a fringe event organised by Women In Architecture, which focused around the question of why conferences and quality networking events all look the same, and how we can improve this. Representatives from UKREiiF were in the room, and clearly listened, and within a week had offered an initiative for attendees to bring U25s on a free ticket for every five tickets sold. Giving companies, particularly SMEs, the opportunity to take younger, less senior members of their team to the Conference, without the financial burden.

The Manser Practice were really pleased to take two Part 1 architects, and one Part 2 with us this year, two through the free UKREiiF ticket initiative, and one through Constructive Futures, a non-for-profit organisation that aims to give opportunities to young people to get them into the construction industry, which Catherine from our York studio is involved with.

Catherine said “It was great to see the students building in confidence talking to professionals and making connections that could lead to work experience opportunities or full-time work. They were engaged with the different talks and exhibitors, as well as asking mentors plenty of questions. For me it was uplifting to see young people engaged in joining the construction industry, with particular focuses in sustainability, and wanting to be up to date with the latest technologies. I also noticed my own confidence building as a young professional, learning from the different talks and events, as well as making connections with other young people in industry.”

Alice, also from our York studio, came with us on a free conference ticket, and took full advantage of three days of interesting talks and panels. She said “the conference really improved my own confidence when networking with other individuals, and it has really given me the confidence to progress my career.

The talks that I attended had great value to me, and gave me a great insight into current trends and problems in the industry. My favourite talks that I attended were those hosted by ‘Women in Architecture’ which has really enabled me to see myself progress in a profession, which lacks in diversity.’

Charlotte, from our London studio says, “Attending UKREiiF provided me with a new perspective on a range of industry-related topics I have an interest in, which includes culture, sustainability and social value. I was fortunate to attend a variety of talks and was surprised by the array of experts from different professional backgrounds on the panels, each with unique perspectives and expertise to contribute to the discussion. It’s certainly given me a lot to think about, and a renewed excitement and confidence to progress my career in the industry.”

For all three it was a great opportunity to expand their industry network, and make connections that will grow in importance as their careers progress. It’s so important for industry professionals at the start of their career to remember that the future projects aren’t going to come from people in high positions now, they will come from the contemporaries you meet early in your career, and building those relationships early stand you and the company your work in good stead to ensure a future pipeline of work, and in turn help progress your career. Initiatives like this one by UKREiiF really help build those relationships, and future pipeline.

See you in Leeds next year.
