Holyhead Ferry Terminal

A whole family of buildings including terminals for the Irish Sea Ferry routes

Working with Mouchel as marine engineers we were tasked with reorganising the existing ferry provisions to accommodate the new high speed ship that Stena were about to introduce on the Irish Sea route. A more ‘airport style’ of operation was required for the main terminal, still maintaining connections to the existing railway station. A range of ancillary buildings in the same style were also required.

As with all transportation buildings the design process involved resolving the passenger routes through the building (in both directions) and keeping them as simple and intuitive as possible. As the passengers enter the building at one end their destination, the ship is visible through large areas of glazing and their route takes them in a straight line towards it.

The buildings, link spans and connections, all needed to be installed whilst retaining existing operational facilities in the port. A complex series of Design & Build contracts was let and The Manser Practice worked closely with a series of other consultants to provide information to a tight programme.

Holyhead was the bigger of 4 Stena ports on the Irish Sea route, where we designed buildings that would give all the ports a recognisable family of buildings. As Hugh Pearman said in The Observer “For doing work this good on an almost impossibly stretched budget at top speed in a remote corner of the Kingdom, Mansers deserve a medal.”
