Plans for a major museum on the south coast

The Manser Practice took part in an invited competition to bring together the collections of Southampton Aviation Museum, Dunkirk Little Ships and the British Military Powerboat Trust onto one site.

Our design takes the form of an extended elliptical tube with the upper volume larger than the footprint below – a shape optimised for suspending aircraft. Raised viewing platforms allow visitors a close view of the aeroplanes, and external terraced areas offer spectacular views out over the Solent.

The modularity of the structure would make it economical to build, creating a new icon bringing jobs and tourism to the Southampton shoreline.
