Lumley Beach Hotel

Sierra Leone

A social enterprise beach hotel in Freetown, Sierra Leone

The Manser Practice were appointed to design a social enterprise hotel on a beach site in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Our design is composed of a series of accommodation blocks wrapped in an environmental screen of louvres that would help reduce solar gain and allow the building to be naturally ventilated.

The hotel was to feature a bar and museum based on the local ‘Krio Houses’, a low-tech example of Creole architecture in West Africa that is sadly disappearing.

These houses were constructed by displaced African people freed from the Atlantic Slave Trade, using construction skills they had learnt in the West-Indies and the southern United States. They were built as simply as possible, using stone bases, brimstone timber weatherboards, and zinc roofs; a vernacular style symbolising the Creole people of West Africa that is sadly disappearing.
